RELAUNCHING the Somerset Otter Award in 2019

We are delighted to announce that in 2019 we will be re-launching the Somerset Otter Award, after much discussion and excitement! The Somerset Otter dates back to 1982 and over that time has had an exceptional array of winning farms. The award has taken a short break, but with so much good practice in Somerset, along with new initiatives, it is time to bring back the Otter!

The theme of the 2019 Somerset Otter will be Soil Management.

By welcoming the Somerset Otter back with a theme this year we aim to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable soil management for food, fuel and fibre production, essential ecosystem functions and better adaptation to climate change for present and future generations.

Examples of on-farm soil management practices include:

  • Keeping soil in the field– Buffer strips, sediment traps, beetle banks, cover crops.
  • Building soil organic matter– Green manures, catch crops.
  • Farm practices– low pressure tyres, direct drilling, min tillage, sub soiling.

The Soil Management theme will allow judges to allocate additional points for soil measures, but the usual judging criteria is still applied.

The winner of the Somerset Otter also goes on to represent the county in the regional Barn Owl Trophy in the same year, the winner of which goes forward as our regions entry into the National Silver Lapwing the following year.

How to enter?

We encourage you to nominate yourself or you can put forward someone else. If you are a farmer that fancies your chances, or you know of a worthy farm that demonstrates good conservation practices alongside farming, then don’t wait…
